The most important part of building a positive relationship is to share things about yourself with the students so they can feel connected and safe with you. When you are open about your own life, and who you are, I find students are more likely to open up and share things about themselves. This document is a copy of the powerpoint I used with my grade 2/3 classes in PSII on my very first day. The first thing I did was tell them about me so they felt comfortable, then I got them to tell me about them! We sat in a circle, so everyone had an equal voice, and played my dice game. Students had SO much fun with this, they asked to play it again and again!

I took the "Inquiring Mind" program to help develop my understanding of the stigma around mental health. We all have mental health, but others need more support. This course helped me to find ways to create a supportive and healthy environment for individuals who struggle with this. I also learned about the identifying factors that could indicate a decline in mental health. This helped me to push past what I had learned here and develop an understanding of what I need to do as a teacher to make my students feel safe and cared for in my classroom space.
