At the outset of practicum, I had put together this comprehensive plan all about animals in the winter. However, once I actually started teaching I found that students were not progressing through the lessons as I had hoped. After working through the first three weeks, I shifted gears completely and began focusing on one animal at a time (that aligned with either adaptation, hibernation or migration), and I connected the animals with the 7 Sacred Teachings. I hope to use this unit plan in the future as well, and adapt it depending on the group of students. This unit has reflected my growth and flexibility in being responsive to students needs in order to provide meaningful and engaging learning opportunities. During this lesson, students engaged with some learning about snow and a science experiment! We created our very own sensory bins with instant snow along with watching a great Mystery Doug video.
Paper Snowflakes
In addition to instant snow, we also spent some time developing our fine motor skills by making some paper snowflakes (with cut paper strips- done by students) and q-tip painting!
