Please see below for a breakdown of my professional goals for this semester. Please note we were pulled out of schools due to COVID-19, after our second week of teaching. I am continuing to work on these goals outside of the classroom environment.
Goal 1:
Develop classroom management strategies that are effective and promote and an engaging learning environment.
Resources: This is hard to learn through resources- classroom management techniques need to be learned by doing; the best way to achieve this goal is to pay close attention to my TA and ask lots of questions! I will continue reading up on classroom management strategies while out of the classroom.
Timeline: I would like to have a solid foundation of classroom management skills by the end of PS2
Indicators of Success: My “toolbox” will be full of ideas and ways to manage a classroom that go beyond traditional techniques.
Implication for Students: Students will be more responsive and feel safer within the classroom; a positive learning environment starts with the teacher. Lessons will run smoother and my own confidence will increase.
Goal 2:
Gain a well-rounded understanding of introduction and “hook” activities to engage students and use these throughout my lessons to spark interest.
TQS 3: Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge
Resources: I am not sure what resources might be available to support this. I will be able to develop this goal by getting feedback and guidance from my TA and UC. I am consistently looking for resources as I develop lessons.
Timeline: Ideally, I would like to complete this goal by the end of PS2.
Indicators of Success: I will have a wide variety of introductory activities to choose from when developing lessons; I will be able to do more than just go over the agenda for the class.
Implication for Students: Students will become more engaged in the lesson and become more invested in the content. Students will be exposed to a variety of anticipatory activities that will help them connect with content.
Goal 3:
Work on learning the numeracy progressions and develop a deeper understanding of numeracy across the curriculum. This is a goal carried from PS1, as I am still working on it- the course was postponed to spring.
TQS 3: Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge
Timeline: I would like to develop this by the end of PSII. I am registered in a web course though CRCPD on numeracy for Spring 2020.
Indicators of Success: I will have a deeper understanding of numeracy progressions and be able to implement those.
Implication for Students: Students will benefit from having numeracy brought into other curriculum areas. My strength is literacy, so my students will have an enriched environment with both literacy and numeracy.
Goal 4:
Become more familiar with provincial legislature, policies, standards, and regulations. This is a goal carried from PS1, as I am still working on it.
Timeline: I would like to be more familiar with these documents by the end of PSI and gain deeper understanding by end of PSII.
Indicators of Success: I will be able to recall more of these documents with ease. I do have an understanding already, but I want to expand.
Implication for Students: If I have a better understanding of the documents, I will be able to become a better teacher. My students will have a teacher who has a well-rounded knowledge of not only the curriculum, but also provincial guidelines.
