During my time in the Grade 3 classroom, students were finishing up their unit talking about Goods and Services. I had been asked to have an impromptu conversation with students on Friday morning about something I noticed in the grocery store... Almost none of the Fruits and Veggies were from Canada, they were all imported! I showed students this video and asked them what they thought: How many of these veggies do we grow in Canada? Students had a lengthy discussion, watched the video a few times over and made their predictions. Some students said most, some said a few, and some guessed none at all; much to their surprise, only the Organic Apples at the end of the video were from Canada. This opened up a rich discussion about Goods and Services- what does Canada give other countries that give us fruit and veggies? Why don't we grow more here? etc.
I was also able to lead students on an exploration of Quality of Life. Students were able to view images and have discussion about various aspects that contribute to Quality of Life in Canada, Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine, and India. See below for the lesson plan and activities.
